**Herb Day in Denmark.
Once a year, along about the last weekend in April, the tiny town of Denmark hosts an annual Herb Day. There can't be more than 12 or 15 people who live in Denmark, but on Herb Day it is not uncommon for a 1,000 people to converge to buy herbs and bedding plants, hanging baskets, all kinds of geraniums…in all, about 350 varieties and 10,000 starters of herbs and herb related plants. The Denmark Mercantile gets transformed into an herb lover and gardener's paradise.
Denmark Hall is filled with other kinds of related and unrelated items, bat houses, bird houses and feeders, herbal homemade soaps and lotions, potpourri supplies, sprouting seeds, ceramic water dispensers for plants, toad houses, t-shirts, gourds etc. There are master gardeners who offer advice and conduct classes.
From the Danish kitchen you'll smell the aroma of Danish pastry and cinnamon rolls with urns of hot coffee. Soon they add selections of chicken noodle casseroles, chili, pies and cakes and more. The proceeds go to the Denmark Beautification Project.
Next door to the Hall is the Danish Lutheran Church and cemetery. It's usually open for visitors and is a good example of the heritage they brought with them from Denmark. It's an interesting little community with a lot of history.
If you miss this, stop at their gift store in the house on the main street west of the Mercantile. If you want to know what else is going on in Denmark, Elsie Driscoll is the person to contact.
